Impact in Action is a series that examines various real-world applications of impact, across social, environmental, economic, cultural and other spheres. Our guest speakers talk through their impact, including planning, measurement and demonstration, and will help attendees consider alternative and effective strategies for impact.

Impact in Action #2 – Get Talking Impact
Presented by Nic Gratton
Get Talking is an approach to Participatory Action Research developed by Staffordshire University, that involves community researchers throughout the research process and is underpinned by a firm foundation or training and support. Get Talking has been used to engagae community researchers, many with lived experiences of the issues being investigated in a number of research projects in Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire. This session will outline a number of these projects and explore the collective impact of the work on individuals, communities and organisations involved.
Impact in Action #3 – The Production of Heritage
Presented by Alan Chandler
Alan’s Production of Heritage project looks at the strategic development and realisation of the Palacio Pereira in Santiago de Chile with Cecilia Puga, Paula Velasco and Alberto Moletto. This led to a series of public debates with the author in Chile, engaging debates on the social role of heritage and how the landscape of policy in Chile can and did shift as a result of the Palacio project. The project was an international case study for the RIBA.

Impact in Action #4 – Sugarless Green
Presented by Melissa Jogie
‘Sugarless Green’ is an educational study which aims to support health and wellbeing in young children by reinforcing correct oral hygiene techniques, and by educating pupils on healthier food choices, as alternatives to sugar. This presentation shares three successful funding schemes based on using the fundamental principles of this intervention. Each year, about 60,000 school days are missed because children need to have tooth extractions. In London boroughs alone, the NHS spends approximately £7M for acute dental care for children, including these emergency extractions.
Impact in Action #5 – Sustainable Farming at Cholderton Estate
Presented by Merrick Denton-Thompson, July 12th
Cholderton Estate is a pilot project, in collaboration with partners from Cranfield University through the Wildlife Trust to the County Council, that is already driving impact in demonstrating how sustainable farming can be achieved. Clean water, clean air and restored nature go hand-in-hand with the production of food; no nitrous oxide is emitted, no groundwater is polluted, carbon is sequestered in a way that secures fertility and makes Cholderton one of the richest estates for biodiversity in the country.
